Kinja'd!!!

A while back, my father in law gave me his chainsaw under the condition that I help him with storm cleanup in the future . Always excited to add another cylinder to my collection I took him up on what turned out to be a 1985 Stihl 028 Wood Boss AV with and 18” bar .

Overall it is in good shape, very little use over its 35 years. It hadn’t been fired up in at least four years and it still had fuel in the tank but after a fresh tank and some pull starting, and some more pull starting, and maybe some starter fluid, followed by some more pull starting it fired right up! Before all of this quarantine excitement I picked up a new chain and a set of bar nuts, since one of those was missing, but have been hesitant to play with something that could cause serious injury if mishandled. Well some other projects have bottle necked around some saw work so this weekend I finally got around to playing with my new-to-me toy.

Back in college I had a six month internship where I ran a saw nearly everyday . The days that I wasn’t running a saw I was carrying a drip torch around and lighting the land on fire for controlled burns , so that was pretty neat. That being said, I have a lot of respect for what can go wrong with a saw so I donned my chaps, gloves and glasses and went to work.

I finished up what needed to be done, plus some smaller stuff to learn the saw before I took on the actual project, and the saw cut like a champ. The 028 is a smaller saw that what I used back in college but as long as you know it’s limitations it’s a damn fine piece of equipment.

It even came with a case!

And a manual!

Future plans include a good tear down and cleaning. It wasn’t used a lot but let’s just say that my father in law is no sawyer so I want to make sure it’s all on the up and up. I’d also like to pick up a 16” bar to really let it rev up for some brush work that I need to do.

I’m just happy to have a saw in my hands again that is mine and not borrowed. May the maintenance and caretaking begin!

Excellent! My only saw is a 1970-ish Jonsereds that my father gave me years ago when he bought a newer Stihl. It’s always been kept up pretty well and I’ve carried that on in my ownership. It’s had an absolute ton of use, and works perfectly. Been using it a lot lately clearing a bit of land but that’s almost done, thanks to being home all the time and being able to take a 15 minute break to cut one tree.

Can’t say that I’m familiar with Jonsered but if it’s made it this long with decent use then it was at least built strong back in the day!  You’ve got a decent amount of acreage that you’re on, right? The working from home situation means that a good portion of my after-hours/weekends are setting up those 15 minute jobs. When your “office” looks out over the property it is hard to ignore things that can be done.

Yup, we’re on 12 acres - not much in the big picture, but it’s a lot if you want to try to maintain it in a specific way. I literally was sitting in my home office eyeing a specific tree (or four) and went out on a break to cut them down so I could see the view better haha

I don’t know a lot about the Jonsereds brand, but there are quite a few at the local small engine shop - old ones, anyway.

I hear you on that. Just a quick felling break!  We’re on some acreage as well but before I moved out here I was in a tiny duplex so I had zero tools for managing the property so the last couple of years has been spent collecting the right equipment. The house itself was the first priority but now that it’s livable I’ve proclaimed this to be the year of the yard.

My collection of yard equipment is somewhat mitigated by my parents being close by (3 miles) with a ton of their own equipment. Doesn’t mean I don’t still WANT a tractor, but things like a log splitter, leaf blower, we share one between us.

That’s a huge help for sure. I grew up on a farm so I have a lot of the know how for doing what I want to do with the land but that farm is 3 and a half hours away so borrowing things is out of the question. My dad took pity on me and gave me his old John Deere with a few attachments about a year ago . That has kept me very busy. As the saying goes “give a man a hammer and everything begins to look like a nail” or something along those lines. Applies to tractors as well haha
